How The Coronavirus Is Impacting College Admissions?
You can’t listen to the news without hearing daily information about the spread of COVID-19. Colleges and universities around the USA and the world are having to make extreme decisions in order to keep their students safe. The impact has reached both high school and college students around the world.
Some of the impacts so far include…
Colleges are being asked to be flexible with missing application materials and make application decisions without having updated information since some high schools are closed and cannot provide updated grades, transcripts, etc.
Service trips abroad and other school trips that high school students were planning on attending are being canceled, so they are having to plan new activity options.
Families are canceling college visits due to their concerns about traveling.
Many colleges are canceling or recalling students back from study abroad experiences this semester.
Some high schools are postponing or canceling college fairs and college visits and may reschedule them for next year.
Some high schools in the USA and around the world are closed for the time being.
In some countries, they have stopped the administration of the ACT in February and SAT in March at certain testing locations.
Some colleges required certain international students to not return to school after the winter break for the spring semester.
Over 500 college students participating in the Semester at Sea program this semester have been stuck at sea for two weeks since they are being denied access to dock in nearby countries.
Some nursing students in Washington and California were exposed to the virus while doing their clinical rounds at nursing homes, so they are having to re-think certain curriculum requirements.
Many colleges are currently discussing major issues and decisions including:
- reductions in student enrollment and how that may impact college budgets
- transitioning to online course options as an alternative if students are not able to come to campus
- cancelations of sporting events
High schools and colleges are being very sensitive to the spread of the virus and will continue to keep families up-to-date as they have to make decisions.
