How To Check SAT Scores?

Image
This is a tough question to answer because it all depends on the type of schools you want to apply to. A strong score for one school may be a noncompetitive score for another school. Instead of getting fixated on a particular test score being a “good score”, I recommend two things. Take practice tests so you can start to determine your testing abilities, strengths/weakness, and you can start to see what range you are testing within. Or work with a testing expert to help you to determine your testing goals, the scores you will most likely achieve, and determine testing abilities and limitations. Start identifying schools you are interested in and check out the average test scores. Typically colleges will either post the middle 50th percentile test score of their accepted or enrolled freshmen students. A great resource to use to check the average ACT and SAT scores for accepted students is by going to College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Stud...

Scholarships are a great way to reduce the cost of college without having to pay them back. The criteria for scholarships vary from family income to academic merit to particular special interests. Trying to decipher what scholarships you qualify for can become a full-time job. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you start researching scholarships… 1) There are two types of scholarships: private scholarships and institutional scholarships. When researching scholarships make sure to research the scholarships offered at the schools on your college list as well as private scholarships. 2) There are so many private scholarships out there that have a variety of requirements and criteria. There are scholarships out there for everyone. When I went to college, I got a few scholarships for people that are deaf or hard of hearing. I got a scholarship from Pizza Hut, my employer, when I was a senior in high school. I have seen scholarships for left-handed people, high school ath...

What Can Be Learned From The School Shootings In The College Admissions Process?

Image
In the wake of yet, more recent school shootings, including most recently at a K-12 school in Denver, Colorado and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, I wanted to provide insights from the perspective of a mother and college counselor. As a parent myself, I have many conversations with my own children about the shootings. After each shooting, they always have lots of questions and want to spend time discussing what happened and how they feel. Often after a shooting, they ask if they can miss school the following day. My children have told me that kids are constantly talking about the shootings at school and that teachers frequently lead conversations letting them know that they are safe. I noticed that my children feel more relieved when we acknowledge the occurrence and they are involved in open-dialogs at home and with their teachers at school. I did research on what we can do to support children and teenagers through the national epidemic we are facing. What I disc...
