Why Summer Experiences Are Important For College Admission?

It is important to think of summer as a part of your overall extracurricular experience. When applying to colleges and universities in the United States, you will have to fill out a list of your activities. On the activities list, colleges will look for school year and summer experiences. Participating in summer experiences not only can be very rewarding to you personally, but also, can make you a more interesting applicant. You will have a more in-depth activities list and you will have more to say in your college applications. Keep your future application activities list in mind when you are selecting summer opportunities.
The most important thing to consider when selecting summer experiences is to follow your interests and passions. Doing the things that you find most compelling will help your application shine and will allow for enriching personal experiences. Keep an open mind and think outside of the box. You have more time on your hands during the summer, so you can plan activities that you normally are not able to do during the school year. Be aware that many formal summer programs have application deadlines as early as January, so it is best to plan ahead.
Colleges appreciate consistency and depth in extracurricular activities, so think about ways you can take existing activities and participate in them in new and more comprehensive ways. For example, if you are a member of your school’s business club, then spend your summer creating a business or participating in a business internship. If you have a passion for the environment and are in an environmentally-based school organization, find an opportunity during the summer where you can make a bigger impact on environmental issues in your community. If you have an interest in political science and loved your AP United States Government class, then take it further by volunteering for a political campaign or politically-based organization.
